Anna paced, eyes cast downward as he waited silently. She knew there could be no good ending to this. They couldn't be together no matter how much she tried to convince herself otherwise. Gabriel had known all along and she hated him for coming into her life, fully aware of the risks. Finally, she turned to him, speaking with shallow breaths. "I feel like I am the conductor on a speeding train, who knows that she can pull on the brakes at any time, within reason, stop and get off at the next station. But instead, she is letting it pick up speed, flinging open the windows and feeling the rush of the winds, the sounds and sights that she hasn't seen or felt in years, knowing full well that unless she pulls those brakes, she is going to crash and be seriously injured or killed. And yet, her racing heart says to just let the train pass through one more station and then maybe she'll have time to stop, all the while not knowing how close she is to the final destination or whether it will all end up a mangled and bloodied mess." With that, she slumped into the chair and buried her head in her hands.
When she looked up, he was on one knee, at her side, gazing at her with those haunting brown eyes. His face, though haggard, lit the space around them and, with a groan of despair and surrender, she fell forward into his waiting arms.
